Module 2: Accompanying the Young Person
This module introduces the skills required for a mentor to prepare a mentee’s assessments, recognising trauma and planning a mentoring programme together with the mentee in a professional manner.

Competencies
At the end of the module/unit the learner will have acquired the responsibility and autonomy to:
– Assess the needs of the mentee
– Respond to the needs of the mentee in a professional manner
– Recognize signs of trauma and adequately respond to it
– Plan and organize an individual mentoring programme
– Deal with the impact of transference on the mentor and the mentee
– Support the mentee in processing a coherent narrative
– Apply attachment theory when working with your mentee
Knowledge
At the end of the module/unit the learner will have been exposed to the following:
– Knowledge of the meaning of transference and countertransference and how this effects the mentoring relationships
– Understanding of attachment theory and how this theory is applied in practice
– Knowledge about signs for trauma on a young person
– Impact of trauma on the young person
– Issues related to digital reality and its effect on young people
Skills
At the end of the module/unit the learner will have acquired the following skills:
– Being flexible in adapting the programme to suit the evolving needs of the mentee
– Supporting the mentee in understanding the impact of digital reality
– Assessing and managing any risks involved
– Use of digital tools in line with regulations protecting privacy
Mode of Delivery
This course will have a mixed learning approach consisting of training seminars, role plays, and personal reflection.
Assessment
Attendance is compulsory since this module requires the active participation of the learners (10% of the overall mark). At the end of some sessions, the participants are given an evaluation sheet to score and fill in to help them with the process of assessment. Each learner will keep a reflection journal of the sessions being delivered at the end of each session during this module. The purpose of the journal is to reflect on the participants’ reactions, insights and critical analyses.
Participants will be requested to share in a group on what they have attained during the sessions being delivered. In the reflection paper, the participant is expected to give a self-analysis of his/her strengths and weaknesses in accompanying a young person in such a mentoring experience.
