Module 4: Tools for Mentoring – Making Sense of the Narrative
This module provides mentors with a set of tools used to help mentees recognize trauma and recognize personal strengths that will help the mentee overcome the issue being faced.

Competencies
At the end of the module/unit the learner will have acquired the responsibility and autonomy to:
– Make sense of the mentee’s life narrative
– Support the mentee in processing a coherent narrative
– Recognize her/his personal strengths in working with young people
– Reflect on her/his own narrative and how this influences the relationship with the mentee
Knowledge
At the end of the module/unit the learner will have been exposed to the following:
– The meaning of a congruent story and how we recognise it
– An understanding how to work with the narrative of the mentee
– Ability to recognise what to look out for when working with homeless young people and how these can influence our views
– How homeless young people view their life and surroundings and what influences their views through their story
Skills
At the end of the module/unit the learner will have acquired the following skills:

Mode of Delivery
This course will have a mixed learning approach consisting of training seminars, practical session, role plays, and personal reflection.
Assessment
Attendance is compulsory since this module requires the active participation of the learners (10% of the overall mark). Participants will be assessed through participation and personal reflection on the tools presented in this module. The trainers will be assessing the abilities and aptitude of each participant in relation to the use of these tools in helping them in their mentoring experience.
While the practice of some of the tools will include peer feedback however, the trainers will give on the spot feedback on the practice of these tools. The learner is expected to write about the practice of these tools, what they learnt and how they intend to use them in the mentoring relationship with homeless young people and those who lack the support of a family.
