Module 4: The Salesian educator: presence
After presenting the Salesian educational approach, and how to create the right environment for it, this module presents the attitudes of the educator within. The Salesian educator is actively present in the places where young people are, and takes part in their daily life, during moments of education, reflection, and games. This module gives an understanding of the attitudes which demonstrate this presence, and provides a tool set to reach them. Learners are presented with practical examples and real-life experiences related to the theme.

Competencies
At the end of the module/unit the learners will have acquired the responsibility and autonomy to:
– Recognize the benefits and challenges of applying presence in the Salesian educational approach.
– Be able to apply a reflective practice approach in their professional lives.
– Establish attitudes which demonstrate Salesian presence.
– Establish a respectful relationship with young people, enter in dialogue, accompany them and share values.
– Adapt according to the unique needs and realities of the young.
Knowledge
At the end of the module/unit the learners will have been exposed to the following:
– Define the meaning of Salesian presence.
– Describe the values of Salesian educator.
– Understand the value and role of presence whilst accompanying young people.
– Identify attitudes which demonstrate Salesian presence.
– Identify ways of living and expressing presence in real-life contexts and in their professional areas.
Skills
At the end of the module/unit the learners will have acquired the following skills:
– Build and sustain meaningful relationships with the young.
– Understand and respond to the individual needs of the young during their accompaniment.
– Apply and demonstrate presence in settings within their professional areas.
– Demonstrate an authentic, trustful, and sincere presence with the young.
– Being approachable and participating in young people’s activities and environments.
Mode of Delivery
This module utilizes a formal and non-formal learning approach, by combining theoretical concepts with practical applications. The sessions within this module will consist of presentations, discussions, hands-on practice, and interactive activities. Learners will have the opportunity to explore different qualities of the Salesian educator and how presence can be implemented in practical situations. Learners will be engaged in group work and discussions to exchange ideas and experiences.
Throughout the course, learners will actively apply the concepts learned in their specific areas and will receive feedback and guidance from instructors and peers to enhance their understanding.
Assessment
Attendance is compulsory since this module requires the active participation of the learners (10% of the overall mark). The participants’ learning progress will be assessed through their active participation in discussions, group activities, and assignments. Oral feedback and support will be provided throughout the teaching and learning process.
Each learner will keep a reflection journal of the sessions being delivered during this module. The purpose of this journal is to reflect on their reactions, insights, and critical analyses. Participants will be requested to share in a group what they have attained during the sessions of this module. For this module, the learner is expected to present an in-depth reflection on the role of Salesian educators, their attitudes, and the value of presence in the Salesian educational approach. Learners present the knowledge and skills gained in establishing presence among young people whilst accompanying them.
At the end of the module the participants are given an evaluation sheet to help them reflect on whether the learning outcomes have been achieved.
