How can we put our hearts in education, to reach out to all young people? How can we put the hearts of young people in their educational journey?
The general aim of this course is to foster excellence in the field of education and pedagogy by empowering professionals and practitioners to familiarise themselves more with non-formal education. Salesian education will be the model presented for non-formal education. This course explores the characteristics that are required to provide a meaningful and engaging educational relationship with the young and provides the essential knowledge and skills related to the Salesian educational approach. Moreover, it provides real-life examples from the field and encourages exchange of best practices and experiences.
This course will provide:
– An understanding of the role and value of non-formal education in formal and informal settings.
– An overview of the Salesian educational approach and its different aspects as a model for non-formal education.
– Values such as inclusivity, respect, and self-determination, related to the Salesian educational approach.
– An understanding of the four pillars of the Salesian educative environment.
– Essential qualities and attitudes of the Salesian educator.
– Practical applications of the Salesian educational approach.
– An awareness of the participants’ own position in the field of education, youth work and/or social welfare.
– An opportunity to explore possibilities for implementing non-formal educational approaches in the participants’ professional areas.
Although the Salesian model is being presented, this course caters also for professionals who do not work in a Salesian setup. The values that will be presented are universally applicable. Whilst the modes of delivery are practical, the participants will also be given the opportunity to design their own non-formal activities within their respective professional fields.
Entry Requirements
- Participants over the age of 18 who have completed at least two years of post-secondary education with at least MQF Level 3 qualifications or a comparable qualification. Preferably, participants will have some form of experience and/or show interest in working in the education and/or youth work and/or social welfare sector.
Learning Outcomes
- Knowledge The learners will be able to: - Acquire basic theoretical background on the role and value of non-formal education. - Understand, compare, and contrast non-formal education with other educational approaches. - Gain an understanding of how value-based education offers a space for inclusion and openness. - Describe the principles and attitudes of the Salesian educational approach from a non-formal aspect. - Describe the four pillars of the Salesian educative environment, and the values they represent. - Recognise and value the role that educators have in influencing the lives of children and their families. - Describe the attitudes of the Salesian educator.
- Skills The learners will be able to: - Design non-formal activities coherent to the Salesian educational approach. - Introduce principles of the Salesian educational approach and apply newly acquired knowledge and skills within - their respective professional areas. - Become aware of their own position, approaches, and pedagogical values in their respective professions. - Reflect on their own practices and the practices within the institutions they are working in. - Cooperate with other learners, and exchange best practices and experiences. - Learn from best practices and experiences.

- This course is intended for professionals working in the fields of education, pedagogy, youth work, and social welfare who wish to broaden their knowledge and skills in non-formal education. It is also suitable for individuals interested in education and pedagogy who would like to gain knowledge and practical insight into the Salesian educational approach.

- Mode of DeliveryThis course is delivered face-to-face through a highly practical and participative learning approach.
Sessions are based on hands-on activities, real-life examples, and case studies, supporting the application of knowledge and skills in real contexts. Collaborative learning is a key element of the course, with opportunities for group work, peer learning, and the exchange of experiences and best practices.
The learning experience is tailored to participants’ needs and professional backgrounds, ensuring relevance, effectiveness, and transferability into practice. Participants are also invited to contribute to this process through reflection and feedback at the end of each module.
In line with the Salesian educational approach, the learning environment is designed to be welcoming and supportive, encouraging participants to feel at ease, actively engage, and share their perspectives and experiences.0 - AssessmentDuring the course, the participants will be assessed on their attendance and participation. Attendance is obligatory. The trainers will be assessing the abilities and aptitude of each participant as part of their assessment in the course. Oral feedback and support will be provided throughout the teaching and learning process.
After each module, the learners will be provided with an evaluation sheet to help them reflect on their achievement of the learning outcomes. To sustain this process, the learning outcomes and objectives of each module are communicated and clarified at the beginning of the module.
At the end of the course, the participants will be requested to present a personal reflection on the Salesian educational approach and where they position themselves in its regard. 40% is allowed for the ongoing assessment during the module (i.e. 10% for each module) and 60% for the reflection paper. A rubric is created for grading purposes. The overall pass mark is 50%.
