Award in Mentoring Homeless Young People and those who lack the Support of a Family.
This course provides the essential knowledge and skills that help start mentoring to homeless young people or those who lack the support of a family. This is achieved through providing insight into the process of mentoring and learning the essential mentoring skills.
This course will provide:
1. Overview of the mentoring environment when working with homeless young people and those lacking the support of a family.
2. Understand various social determinants and their impact on the wellbeing of young people experiencing homelessness and/or lack the support of a family.
3. Essential Qualities of a good mentor.
4. Knowledge and Skills on accompanying these young people through mentoring.
5. Understand and apply communication theory and skills.
6. Framework for sharing experience through storytelling.
7. Tools to motivate mentees to plan their future and follow through the plan and achieve positive results.
The course aims to equip participants with knowledge and skills in mentorship by focusing on issues related to homeless young people and/or those who lack the support of the family, communication skills, building a personal and professional mentoring relationship and how to help set personal goals toward growth.
The four modules are designed to train and prepare participants to work as mentors for homeless young people and/or those who lack the support of a family through the provision of quality learning, training and a practical approach. The course builds on an eclectic approach based on knowledge from social care, youth work, and psychology based on experiential learning. The first module provides the learner with an overview of the experience of youth homelessness and the building of an appropriate mentoring relationship. The second module focuses on recognising trauma and the skills to offer a mentoring programme in a professional manner. Building on the previous modules, the third unit provides learners with communication skills. The fourth module provides the future mentors with a set of tools that can be used to help mentees recognize trauma and recognize personal strengths that will support them to recognise and address their challenges.
Entry Requirements
- Participants over the age of 18 who have completed at least two years of post-secondaty education with at least MQF Level 3 qualifications or a comparable qualification. Preferably, participabts will have some form of experience and/or show interest in working with homeless young people and/or those lacking the support of a family.
Learning Outcomes
- Knowledge The learner will be able to: a. Understand the meaning of mentoring and gain theoretical knowledge on the social issues related to youth homelessness and the lack of support of a family for a young person. b. Acquire basic theoretical background on the role and value of mentoring c. Recognize the ethical framework within which mentoring can function d. Understand communication theory and its processes. e. Learn from best practices
- Skills The learner will be able to: a. Identify specific areas of growth for the mentee b. Use helping skills such as attending, paraphrasing, active listening and empathy c. Demonstrate skills in verbal and nonverbal communication. d. Be able to create and maintain a safe space for mentor and mentee e. Be able to use tools and skills useful in mentoring
Target Audience
- This course is designed for volunteers and workers who are active in the social and youth care sectors who would like to improve their skills. It is also suitable for those who have an interest in the role of mentoring and want to gain knowledge and skills enabling them to take on the mentoring of homeless young people or those young people who lack the support of a family.

- Mode of DeliveryThis course is delivered using a blended learning approach, combining training seminars, practical sessions, role plays, and personal reflection. Participants are also expected to engage in self-directed study throughout each module, supporting the development and application of their mentoring skills.0
- AssessmentDuring the training, the participants will be assessed on their attendance and participation. Attendance is obligatory. The trainers will be assessing the abilities and aptitude of each participant as part of their assessment in the training programme.
During the sessions, the learners will be provided with evaluation sheets to help them in reflecting on achieving the learning outcomes. At the end of the course, Tthe participants will also be requested to present a personal reflection on the role of the mentor and how they see themselves within the role of a mentor.
The participant will be assessed during a practical/simulation mentoring session.
40% is allowed for the ongoing assessment during the module (i.e. 10% for each module) and 60% for the reflection paper.0
